As Americans Flee Faith, They Embrace Astrology and Other Nonsense

I love it when false prophets have to fess up. Not that acknowledging failure necessarily changes their schtick, their faux modus operandi, which is, as for all so-called “prophets,” to invent “predictions” about what will happen in the future and peddle them to gullible acolytes as reality-tested, trustworthy and reliable.

It’s Time to End the Hyde Amendment

It is high time that we end the destructive Hyde Amendment, a religiously rooted piece of legislation that denies abortion coverage for otherwise eligible federal health care recipients. Simply put, the Hyde Amendment is based on religious intent — not science. And the impact is ruinous.

The Hyde Amendment was introduced by staunchly Catholic Rep. Henry J. Hyde and first enacted in Congress in 1976. Hyde’s intent with this amendment was to make abortion as inaccessible as possible. On the heels of the Supreme Court’s landmark case Roe v. Wade, which made abortion a constitutional right, Hyde sought an opportunity to restrict abortion on a broad scale. He found that by targeting low-income women and women on federal health plans, he could do just that. And since 1976, the Hyde Amendment has been included in every Congressional appropriation act.

Me and Jesus

I explained why, in my own opinion, I can no longer consider myself a Christian, and I received a lot of responses:  some sympathetic, others not so sympathetic; some seeing the point and others disagreeing.

One particular disagreement gets to the heart of what I was trying to say.  Several people (OK, lots of people) have commented that if I follow the ethical teachings of Jesus that in that sense I really am a Christian and might as well admit it.   Part of me agrees with that – it’s what I’ve long thought – but what I came to realize yesterday during my class lecture is that there is a strong sense in which that is also not true.  Here I’ll try to explain.

I do indeed try to adhere to the ethical teachings of Jesus as I see them.

Congresswoman QAnon: Vaccine Passports Are the “Mark of the Beast”

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, the conspiracy theorist and publicity hound who was banned from sitting on any committees because of her repeated support of violence against her colleagues, is still spreading lies that are designed to hurt as many Americans as possible.

This time, she’s going after the idea of vaccine “passports” — which make it clear that you’re inoculated against COVID when attending a concert, traveling abroad, or going to a restaurant — are actually the biblical “Mark of the Beast”:

“… I asked the question earlier today, is this something like Biden’s Mark of the Beast? Because that is really disturbing and not good… You see, it’s still the same thing. It’s still fascism or Communism — whatever you want to call it — but it’s coming from private companies. So I have a term for that. I call it Corporate Communism.“
