The Golden Calf is one of the most famous stories in the Old Testament. The Israelites, newly freed from Egyptian slavery, have a crisis of faith while God is speaking with Moses on Mount Sinai. They melt down the golden jewelry to construct a physical god — a statue in the shape of a calf — to worship in place of their abstract, invisible deity. It’s a story about the allure of idolatry, how easy it is to abandon one’s commitments to principle in favor of shiny, easy falsehoods.
Like so many of us, Rep. Al Green (D-Texas) has had it with self-righteous Republicans wielding religion as a cudgel with which to oppress. In this case, the GOP is bleating the lie that granting LGBTQ citizens protection under the Civil Rights Act would be an infringement upon their religious rights.
Secular Sexuality 08.08 with Christy Powell, Rudy Bee, Marie D’Elephan
If SecX was looking for a soulmate, Rudy and Marie would be pretty close to the top of our list. Alas there are neither perfect partners nor podcasters, at least until Elliot Page starts a YouTube channel. Still this black and white expectation that god and destiny will bring us the perfect person is a persistent one.
Dr. Brown: Evangelicals Need to Hate More Nicely
Michael Brown is an older white evangelical who’s published a great many books and taught at various seminaries. His doctorate is in Near Eastern Languages. Though he doesn’t call himself “Dr. Michael Brown” in the Original Post (OP) we’re talking about today, he does operate an advice website called Ask Dr. Brown. The site deals only with evangelical culture-war topics and has nothing to do with his area of formal expertise. So he follows in that fine evangelical tradition of using honorifics even if they have nothing whatsoever to do with his work.
