New Poll Shows the Effect of Religious Ignorance on Scientific Issues

While most Americans understand that smoking causes cancer and that a mental illness affects the brain (real stumper, that one), only 53% are confident about childhood vaccines being safe and effective, 31% confidently accept evolution, and even fewer are confident about the age of the Earth and origin of the universe.

Creationists Say Smithsonian Is Pushing “Religion of Naturalism”

ub4rlw7oxltazquuga7a[1]Young-Earth creationist Ken Ham—whose non-profit organization has benefited from millions of dollars in subsidies and tax breaks—says that the Smithsonian’s recent acquisition of a nearly complete T-Rex fossil is an egregious use of American tax dollars to fund “the religion of naturalism.” The T-Rex—delivered to Washington, D.C. last week—was discovered in 1988 by a Montana rancher near Fort Peck Reservoir and is owned by the Army Corps of Engineers. Thomas P. Bostick, the Army Corps commander who signed off on a 50-year loan of the fossil to the Natural History Museum, declared it to be “a wonderful day for the nation.” [Read more]

It’s OK to Surrender Wife to Rapist, Egyptian Cleric Says in Fatwa

egypt-fatwa-wife-rape.si[1]An Egyptian preacher has issued a fatwa – an Islamic legal opinion – according to which rape is like robbery and a husband should not risk his life protecting his wife’s honor from another man. Yasser Burhami, the vice president of Salafist Call, the religious arm of the political ultra-conservative Nour party, has compared a rape with a robbery, saying that nobody should put their live in danger for money. “In this case he [husband] is forced [to surrender her] and not obliged [to defend her],”Al Arabiya quoted the cleric as saying in his fatwa. [Read more]

Raising an Atheist Child is Child Abuse

child-rearing01[1]It seems that I just don’t learn. My last blog, “Teaching a Child Your Religion is Not Child Abuse” about why parents raising their child in their religious tradition is not child abuse received a lot of attention, mainly from those who disagree with me, some quite strongly.  During my many, many discussions about that blog, I wrote a paragraph reversing the argument to one showing that raising your child to be an atheist is the real child abuse. Cults, Christianity, Toxic Beliefs and Health

backyard-300x262[1]I recently separated from a religious cult that I grew up in. During the time I was questioning the beliefs of this cult, I realized that many of these beliefs unfortunately are also foundational beliefs in modern day evangelical Christianity as well. So I ended up leaving not only the cult, but Christianity also. Growing up in immersed in these beliefs has actually negatively affected my health and emotional well being. I’m receiving beautiful healing in this area even now. And as part of my healing, I’ve decided to dissect the reasons why and how religion turned out to be harmful for me. [Read more]

China to Have World’s Largest Christian Population by 2025, Religion Expert Says

bibles-in-china[1]Although China is officially an atheist country, its Protestant population is likely to swell to 160 million by 2025, according to a religion expert, who says not many are prepared for “this dramatic change.” “By my calculations China is destined to become the largest Christian country in the world very soon,” Fenggang Yang, a professor of sociology at Purdue University, told The Telegraph. “It is going to be less than a generation. Not many people are prepared for this dramatic change,” adds Yang, author of Religion in China: Survival and Revival under Communist Rule. [Read more]

If Moral… Why God?

theimmoral[1]If a human being is already moral, why god? This is a question I have pondered since my de-conversion from Christianity years ago. The central dogma of Christianity states that all humans are born into sin, and only by accepting a martyr/savior’s “selfless” act of submitting to his own death on behalf of human sin, can sin be forgiven. Without getting into the 44,000+ denominational ways of interpreting what sin is exactly, or dealing with the infinite number of sins that are manufactured daily by the faithful, I want to focus on what Christians call the “Ten Commandments”. In particular, the only 3 that actually are relevant to true transgressions that were considered immoral long before Christianity came to be. [Read more]

Former Archbishop of Canterbury: We Are a Post-Christian Nation

Rowan-Williams_2893754b[1]Britain is now a “post-Christian” country, the former archbishop of Canterbury has declared, as research suggests that the majority of Anglicans and Roman Catholics now feel afraid to express their beliefs. In an interview with The Telegraph, Lord Williams of Oystermouth says Britain is no longer “a nation of believers” and that a further decline in the sway of the Church is likely in the years ahead. While the country is not populated exclusively by atheists, the former archbishop warns that the era of regular and widespread worship is over.
