Why is Religion Harmful in Politics? A Case Study

WhyIsReligion2[1]Many people say that atheists spend far too much time worrying about what others believe, and tell atheists that people should be able to believe whatever they want as long as it does no harm to anyone. To a point this is true; The only harm passive belief (i.e. belief in a god that made the universe without preaching) does is deny the believer certain facts, and clouds the reasoning process. Passive belief only affects the believer, and to this end, only stands to affect the believer. [Read more]

Churches Celebrate The Beginning Of LentA pastor died as his congregation yelled at him over his alleged infidelity. Bishop Bobby Davis, pastor of the Miracle Faith World Outreach Church, dropped dead as his congregation shouted support for him, the Connecticut Post reported. “After the service on Sunday the bishop’s family asked us to remain in the church and the bishop confessed to us something that happened long ago,” Judy Stovall, a church elder, said. [Read more]

House OKs Religious Exemptions to Having a Healthcare Plan

House Democrats joined Republicans on Tuesday to pass legislation that would expand an exemption under ObamaCare for people who don’t want health insurance for religious reasons. The Republican House has passed dozens of bills to chip away at ObamaCare over the last few years, some of which had support from more than 30 Democrats. But the bill up today was considered under a suspension of the rules, which meant that support from about 50 Democrats was needed in order for the bills to pass with a two-thirds majority vote. How Atheism Helped Create the Modern World

F7EBE243-EAAD-4A23-BF6D3CDA85BC220E_article[1]Science’s contributions to the spread of disbelief is the least controversial segment of the virtuous cycle for which I am arguing in seventeenth-century Europe. For science’s methods are clearly troublesome for religion. The devout, to begin with, are not wont to view their precepts merely as propositions to be controverted or confirmed. The orthodox, as a rule, are used to arguments being settled by authority, not experiment. The hope belief offers does not always stand up well to observation and experience: life sometimes works out okay; sometimes it doesn’t. [Read more]

Open Letter to a Too Small God

3328188[1]I’ve known it for awhile, but it all came together when I was watching Cosmos. I’d never heard of this Giordano Bruno fellow but I like what he had to say when the institutional Church of the day came after him for entertaining rational thought (a.k.a., thinking for himself, not towing the party line). He said, “Your God is too small.” Frankly, in those five little words he completely nailed the problem. Any understanding of God that cannot withstand questions and rational thought is a “too small” god. I’m sorry, but that’s you.
